Rangers' Predicted XI vs FC Ufa

As the mammoth Europa League clash gets closer, we take a look at how Rangers could look against Ufa on Thursday night.

Steven Gerrard won’t have much to ponder after a stunning 3-1 win at Rugby Park against Kilmarnock. The Gers were dominant against Killie, and playing the same XI wouldn’t be scoffed at by supporters.

However, there remains a couple of tweaks that could and should be made if Rangers are to be on the end of the right results. With Ufa providing fresh opposition given that it’s the first time the clubs have met, Rangers have to be wary.

It’s remarkable how well the back four are doing on a consistent basis considering how often the full-backs are being shifted around. Borna Barisic, Andy Halliday, James Tavernier, and Jon Flanagan have all been rotated recently. However, performances and results have stayed on an upward trajectory.

Defensive shuffle

The same will have to be done on Thursday night. Barisic will drop out due to his ineligible status. Yet, who Gerrard selects in his place will be an interesting one.

Halliday has shown a solid nature to his play in the last two matches against Kilmarnock and Maribor respectively. The performances have given him a new lease of life, and he looks to be gaining confidence after every match.

However, despite his Rangers revival, Gerrard could opt for Flanagan. The former Liverpool full-back has been a solid acquisition, and these are surely the kind of games he was brought in for. Halliday is always a reliable option, but it would be surprising if Gerrard went for anyone other than Flanagan.

Midfield changes

There could be a couple of midfield changes, particularly in the central area.

Ovie Ejaria and Halliday did well at Rugby Park. However, new hero Lassana Coulibaly and Ryan Jack have to return if both are fit. The pair have put in terrific individual displays in the previous qualifying rounds. Both should therefore take their rightful places in midfield if they’re both fit.

One man who won’t be fit however is Jamie Murphy. The Rangers winger pulled up on the Rugby Park turf with a bad knock, and had to be stretchered off. This should, however, be a simple adjustment.

Daniel Candeias is likely to slot into that position ahead of Glenn Middleton. The right-winger can be a tricky customer on his game, and Rangers will need that from him on Thursday night.

Outside of that, Gerrard appears good to go.

Alfredo Morelos will undoubtedly be the key to unlocking the opposition defence once more. The striker is on a purple patch of form, and will take his rightful place up front.
