Greg Docherty has opened up on the Official Rangers Podcast, after returning to Ibrox from Shrewsbury Town.
The 22-year-old midfielder played 50 games on loan in League One this season. He certainly made an impression, too.
Seven goals and eight assists in the league alone, helped him scoop Player of the Season at the club’s awards night [Shropshire Star].
Now the regular EFL season is finished though, he’s back in Glasgow. A fan account also claimed he was involved in a bounce match against a Chelsea XI on Tuesday morning.
Docherty admits that during his stint south of the border, he always had an eye on Rangers.
“I had obviously still followed the club massively and I watched all the European games”, he told the Official Rangers Podcast. “But I’m not going to lie, it was difficult watching them because it gets that fire inside you that you really want to be a part of it.”
“Watching the Old Firm on Sunday was fantastic and you could really see the buzz back in the place. And you could see that we may be on the brink of something special, and you could see that the fans are back on board.
“It’s just a good time to be at the club and I knew this season that if I stagnated this year, it wouldn’t have benefited me as much as going out and getting games.”
Docherty still has three years remaining on his Ibrox contract [Transfermarkt], so he has plenty of time to make an impact.
There’s no doubt so much game time this season, will stand him in good stead, too.
There’s plenty of competition in midfield, though, so it’s not going to be easy.
Pre-season could have a big say on how a number of players fare in 2019/20, and Docherty will be eager to prove that he’s a better player than the one who left for Shrewsbury, back in August.
