Former Rangers striker Kenny Miller has called for a ‘refresh’ at Ibrox rather than a rebuild after Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Celtic.
The ex-Gers hitman – who had three spells at Ibrox as a player – has been speaking to Sky Sports after the Viapley Cup final loss.
Rangers were 2-0 down to a pair of Kyogo Furuhashi brace before Alfredo Morelos gave Michael Beale’s side hope.
That hope amounted to nothing though as Rangers were left defeated by their Old Firm rivals.
That loss has sparked major debate on social media given that some believe the time is right for a rebuild.
Beale’s starting XI against Celtic contained too many of the usual faces and it may be time for Rangers to make some moves.
However, Miller doesn’t think that’s needed and still believes that Rangers have a ‘good squad’ with real strength and depth.
Miller did though predict up to four new signings this summer alongside a number of departures to freshen up the Rangers squad, not rebuild it.
“I think rebuild is way too strong,” said Miller. “Rangers are a good squad, they’ve got a lot of strength and depth. Michael Beale will always look to put his own stamp on it, he’s already started that with the two additions in January. “I would imagine another three or four will come in the summer and there will be people who will move out as well.”
“He’s already said the squad needs trimmed, there are too many players there which even on a day-to-day situation becomes maybe unmanageable for training. He’ll definitely have not a rebuild, but there will be maybe a refresh of the squad in the summer,” he added.
Rangers need changes, maybe more than Kenny Miller imagines
A rebuild sounds strong but Rangers may need more than the four signings Miller is talking about.
Sure, much may depend on the contracts of Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos but this squad has too many passengers.
There are too many players who were signed to support the squad and not enough arrivals to actually bolster the starting XI.
It’s time for Rangers to sign a long-term goalkeeping solution and not just keep going year-to-year with the ageing Allan McGregor.
It’s time for Rangers to add more energy in the middle of the park; the Gers couldn’t cope with Celtic’s engine room as their movement picked Beale’s men apart.
It’s time for attackers who can contribute regularly and not in fits and starts like Scott Wright, Rabbi Matondo, Fashion Sakala and Kemar Roofe.
It’s time for Rangers for to really focus on the starting XI and adding players who can contribute in the big moments and the big games.
Ross Wilson is under huge pressure and whilst Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin were solid additions in January, much more are needed.
