Rangers have been handed a major Alex Lowry boost as B Team boss David McCallum reveals the teenage talent is edging closer to a return.

The Gers youth side boss was speaking ahead of the UEFA Youth League visit of Liverpool as the Ibrox U19s prepare to take on a talent-strewn Anfield youth side who beat them 4-1 on Merseyside last week.

Just like with the top team, Rangers will be hoping things are different for the young bears who had given a solid account of themselves in this season’s competition up to the defeat against the Reds’ youth outfit.

But for Gers fans eager to see Alex Lowry return to the top team – amid a spate of serious first-team injuries that are set to hamper Rangers until after the World Cup – the latest from David McCallum was nothing but positive.

The likeable Rangers coach also claimed that he is in close contact with the first team regarding how best to progress with Alex Lowry, 19, as the midfielder works his way back from a serious injury that was inflicted by Dumbarton hammer thrower Ally Love and infuriated the club.

However, despite the positive news Alex Lowry won’t be involved against Liverpool.

“He won’t be involved in our game tomorrow, it’s slightly too soon for that,” said McCallum [Rangers Review].

“There’s been talk about looking at the fixtures coming up to see where he might get some opportunities.

“He’s back training and he’s looking good, but there’s a bit of care to be taken to make sure that when he does go back into games, he’s able to put himself in that environment full-on without any concerns at all, even just in terms of his general fitness.

“You don’t want to put him in that environment without having his fitness levels and endurance levels at a point where he can sustain his performances.

“Hopefully he’s not too far away. We’re having conversations with the staff to see when he might return.”

Meanwhile, Rangers have moved to sign up one Academy graduate for whom there are majorly high hopes at Ibrox.
