Steven Davis would have been as surprised as any Rangers fan when he was asked if he wanted to be the next manager of the club.

The 38-year old might only be the interim boss until a permanent successor to Michael Beale can be found, however, he will still want to impress in the two games that he has in charge.

The first game in management for Steven Davis will be in the Europa League with the Rangers midfielder explaining what his hopes are for the job long-term, via Rangers TV.

Steven Davis to take one day at a time in Rangers job

It was a left field choice but one that actually makes sense on paper.

Even the coaching team of Alex Rae, Steven Smith and Brian Gilmour is well balanced with a mix of technical coaches and old school mentality.

I’ll let you work out who is who.

During the pre-match press conference for the Europa League tie with Limassol, Steven Davis said of his long term aspirations when asked about his role as Rangers interim manager:

“Listen there’s not been any conversation in terms of a time frame. It all happened very quickly. I was asked to come in and take the game tonight.

“How things play out after that I’m not too sure. Regarding my feelings around it, I’ve obviously got ambitions. I did not quite expect it to happen quite as soon.

“I’m just determined to make the most of the opportunity I’ve been given and we will see what develops from there.”

Davis’ professionalism and reputation throughout the game sees him as an obvious manager of the future.

Despite still, technically, undergoing rehabilitation for the anterior cruciate ligament knee injury he sustained last January, it may be that this sojourn into management sees him hang up the boots.

Getting pain free is one thing, but it’s a long way for a 39-year old (in January) to get match fit and play regularly again.

Itonically, it is a player with Steven Davis’ attributes that Rangers are in desperate need of just now, hopefully though, he’s every bit as good at giving the instructions as he was at implementing them.
