Rangers fans sound out ex-River boss linked to Atletico Madrid

As Rangers fans continue to muse over the future of Giovanni van Bronckhorst, one coach who has popped up on the radar of supporters is former River Plate boss Marcelo Gallardo.

But if the Gers were to pull off an ambitious coup for the Argentine coach they’d need to pip one of the biggest names in Europe with Atletico Madrid seemingly targeting the manager as a successor to Diego Simeone [A24].

We should stress that there is no official link to Gallardo and we are merely reacting to discussions happening online amongst supporters.

But those Atletico Madrid links shows how highly the former Argentina international is thought of in the game, even if Marcelo Gallardo is yet to manage a team in European football.

Rangers fans having Marcelo Gallardo discussion

The conversation comes after the legendary former River Plate boss left the Estadio Monumental after an eight-year stint in charge of the famous Buenos Aires club.

In that period, Marcelo Gallardo won 14 major honours including one Argentine Primera Division and two Copa Libertadores.

Not that Gallardo doesn’t have any experience of European football at all; in an impressive playing career the former midfielder played in France with AS Monaco and PSG but spent most of his time turning out for River Plate.

The 44-times capped for Argentina star also played in the US with DC United and finished his career in Uruguay with Nacional, who were coincidentally Marcelo Gallardo’s first club in management.

Rangers fans are clearly frustrated with the situation surrounding Giovanni van Bronckhorst who has overseen an abysmal Champions League campaign and stuttering Scottish Premiership season.

Rangers have picked up four points from their last nine, drawing with Livingston at Ibrox and being beaten by St Johnstone in Perth.

The latter is the final straw for plenty of fans who are already looking elsewhere with the Rangers manager’s writing seemingly on the wall and the gap between the Gers and league leaders Celtic now seven points.

Marcelo Gallardo might represent an ambitious appointment by Rangers, but he’s not the only manager catching the eye of supporters.
