Legendary Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor has been one of the first names on the teamsheet in recent seasons, but now supporters are asking questions of the veteran goalie.

Before we launch into anything here, it’s important to recognise the immense contribution of McGregor over the last few seasons in both Europe and domestically.

Now 39, McGregor is a Rangers legend and his performances last season – some of which defied all goalkeeping logic – are a big reason why we secured 55, as his Player of the Year award proves.

McGregor has made more appearances than anyone else in Rangers history in European football and he remains a figure so ginormous amongst the support it’s almost sacrilegious to criticise him.

But – and in the context of a season where Rangers cannot conceding full stop never mind shipping the first goal – there needs to be a better solution than the veteran stopper at present.

Remarkably, McGregor has failed to keep out any of the last five efforts on goal – with supporters critical of his positioning and shot stopping in Hibs’ opening two strikes in a 3-1 defeat at Hampden – with Rangers conceding nine goals from the last 12 shots on target.

McGregor’s aura as a giant between the Gers sticks is waning and even he himself would admit that at the moment, he is not playing at the top of his game.

It’s a big decision to make for Giovanni van Bronckhorst – who was at the Ibrox club when McGregor was a youth player – but one fans now fear must be made:

New Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has a host of big decisions to make over the next few days and weeks and the situation surrounding McGregor and who plays in goal will be amongst the most pertinent.

However, there is one thing in particular that Gio believes is “not ideal” about his appointment at Ibrox.
