Rangers defeated Hamilton in a bounce match at the Rangers Training Centre on Friday afternoon as Calvin Bassey made an immediate impact with a goal.

Accies took the lead inside the opening ten minutes courtesy of a Ronan Hughes strike but Bassey, who recently joined from Premier League club Leicester City, drew the hosts level with a header from a Ryan Kent cross.

The Gers pushed for a winner over the course of the second half and were eventually rewarded for their efforts when Alfredo Morelos earned a penalty three minutes from time.

Steven Gerrard’s side had their troubles from 12 yards last season but Morelos dusted himself off and dispatched the spot-kick to give his side a victory.

The vast majority of the first-team squad were given runouts including returning loanee Jamie Murphy, new signing Jon McLaughlin and promising young defender Lewis Mayo.

However, five stars – Steven Davis, Allan McGregor, Ryan Jack, Nathan Patterson and Filip Helander – missed the game due to ‘minor knocks’.

There are several key players on that list and Bears will be hoping all five will be able to return to action sooner rather than later.

After a long break due to the global health crisis, it’s essential the whole squad gets playing time in the lead up to the new Scottish Premiership season.

There will be plenty more opportunities to get minutes in the legs, though, with four formal pre-season fixtures including two against esteemed French opposition, coming up later this month.
