Rangers’ move for Nicolas Raskin takes investment in players from the Belgian Pro League to over £10m.

The Gers reportedly shelled out £1.75m to sign the 21-year-old midfielder from Standard Liege on Deadline Day.

A highly-rated Belgian youth international, Rangers held off interest from several top European clubs to secure the signature and everyone is excited about what Nicolas Raskin can bring to Ibrox.

But the midfielder becomes the latest of several players Rangers have signed from the Belgian Pro League over the last few seasons.

Nicolas Raskin the latest Rangers Pro League raid

Romanian playmaker Ianis Hagi first joined on a loan deal from RC Genk in 2020 before joining in a reported £3m transfer the following summer.

The attacking midfielder was then joined by former Anderlecht striker Kemar Roofe, who joined Rangers from the Belgian club in a reported £3.5m deal in the summer of the same year.

Rangers held off major competition to sign Fashion Sakala in the summer of 2021, with the Zambian attacker joining on a pre-contract from KV Oostende.

And whilst Rabbi Matondo joined last summer on a £2.5m deal from Schalke 04, this was after a successful season on loan at Belgian Pro League side Cercle Brugge.

That brings Rangers investment into Belgian Pro League players to £10.75m in the current squad and stands as evidence that Ross Wilson views the league as a solid breeding ground for talent.

With the signings a mixed bag at times, let’s hope the first actual Belgian of the bunch in Nicolas Raskin goes on to leave an impression with Rangers.

The young Belgian midfielder certainly talks a good game and let’s see what he has to bring to a resurgent Ibrox side.

Meanwhile, Rangers fans might need to wait to see Nicolas Raskin make his debut.
