Kevin Muscat wants to become the new Rangers boss and is scrapping talks over a new deal with Yokohama F. Marinos.

Rangers are hunting for a new manager after parting ways with boss Michael Beale late on Sunday night.

Beale had been under immense pressure for weeks and a 3-1 home defeat to Aberdeen on Saturday proved to be the final straw.

Beale has gone after less than a year in the job and Rangers have now started the search for another new boss.

We are already seeing plenty of rumours and one of the strongest so far surrounds a former Rangers player…

Kevin Muscat wants Rangers job

TalkSPORT reported on Monday that Yokohama F. Marinos boss Kevin Muscat is interested in discussing the Rangers job.

The Australian had a spell at Rangers as a player and seemingly wants to take the reins at Ibrox.

The Daily Record now claim that Muscat has even abandoned talks over a new contract with Yokohama F. Marinos.

It’s stated that Muscat had been offered a new deal to extend his stay in Japan.

However, Muscat is dodging the deal at the moment in the hope of landing the Rangers job.

Muscat only has a couple of months left on his contract and he is now thought to be on a preliminary Rangers shortlist for the job.

Muscat impressed Pep Guardiola

Muscat won the J1 League title last season and has been continuing Ange Postecoglou’s fine work with Yokohama F. Marinos.

There are still question marks over his suitability though having struggled in his one European managerial job with Sint-Truiden in Belgium.

Muscat did receive lofty praise earlier this year though with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola hailing him and his team.

Yokohama F. Marinos are part of the City Football Group and that means a strong connection with City and pre-season friendlies taking place against each other.

Guardiola was asked about Muscat’s side before locking horns in pre-season and he raved about what the Australian is doing whilst speaking to Optus Sport.

“I watched Yokohama and I like what I see. Maybe because we are in the same football group – the City Football Group – they are doing a very good job,” said Guardiola.

“Tomorrow will be so difficult for us because they are so aggressive. They are dynamic in their process, the build-up, everything they do. I like it. I say wow,” he added.

That’s the kind of thing Rangers fans would love to see and Muscat now appears to be leaving the door open for an Ibrox return.
