Celtic are nervously awaiting the outcome of an injury to captain Callum McGregor just as the Premiership momentum threatens to swing towards Rangers.

The Parkhead side have looked ropey in their last two Premiership outings and are preparing to face St Johnstone this weekend without their influential captain in the side.

This is after the midfielder went off midway through the first half in the Parkhead side’s 3-1 Champions League defeat to RB Leipzig in Germany.

Should the injury keep Callum McGregor out for an extended period it obviously represents a blow to Celtic and a boost to Rangers in the title race.

A despondent Parkhead manager Ange Postecoglou spoke after the club’s defeat in Germany and claimed that the situation “doesn’t look good”.

“It doesn’t look good,” said Postecoglou [Herald].

“Again, we’re a bit unlucky with the goal ’cause he went to have a shot and something tweaked his knee.

“He put in an enormous effort to chase back and it was his toe-poke that put the guy through.

“Looking at it, it doesn’t look good. But I’ll wait and see what the doctors say.”

Rangers injury problems persist as Celtic face Callum McGregor blow

The potential injury to Callum McGregor comes at a time when Celtic are also without influential centre-back Cameron Carter Vickers, who cost the Parkhead side £6m rising to £10m this summer [the Sun].

Whilst the Parkhead side have a sizeable squad, Rangers fans will be hoping the club’s Scottish Premiership rivals can take advantage of these key player absences in the weeks ahead.

Rangers are no strangers to injury themselves and only this week got the news that John Souttar, Filip Helander and Tom Lawrence are ruled out until after the World Cup.

They join other influential players like Ianis Hagi and Kemar Roofe on the sidelines as the Ibrox side battle on without some of the club’s biggest earners.
