As quoted by the Glasgow Evening Times, Steven Gerrard has made some intriguing comments about Ryan Kent.
He compared the winger to Sheyi Ojo, who, just as Kent was last season, finds himself on loan with the Gers.
The 22-year-old ended the 2018/19 campaign as a cult hero adored by the Ibrox faithful. However, it seems he wasn’t always sure it was the place for him.

Kent unsure about Rangers loan stint

“I think Ryan was quite shy when he came in,” suggested Gerrard, as quoted by the Glasgow Evening Times. “He had a lot of anxiety and in the beginning, he was wondering whether it was the right move for him.”
“He had a lot of options, but I think the dressing-room and staff really helped him settle and put a lot of confidence into him.
“I don’t think he turned up confident. We had to build on that and it maybe took six to eight weeks until he really felt like a Rangers player. Whereas Sheyi has bowled in with his shoulders back and said ‘yeah, this is a bit of me, I’m loving the club and the supporters, I fancy it’ and he has started very hungry.”

Verdict

It’s interesting to get this kind of insight from the Gers manager.
When fans think of Kent, visions of him tearing Mikael Lustig apart in Old Firms quickly to spring to mind. However, it did take him a while to get going in Light Blue. In fact, it was eleven matches before he found the net for the first time.
Now, we know initial shyness and uncertainty held him back during that opening period.
Sheyi Ojo is clearly a different type of character who has really hit the ground running. He seems determined to make the most of every minute of his loan stint and already has two goals in three competitive appearances for the Gers, alongside multiple strikes in pre-season.

Let’s hope he continues to produce going forward, including in today’s Scottish Premiership opener against Kilmarnock.
