Jermain Defoe taken aback by high level of Rangers sports science team

Speaking on Talksport, Jermain Defoe has praised the standard of sports science at Rangers, claiming it’s ‘on another level’.

Rangers are the seventh club he’s represented across a career spanning two decades. He’s played over fifty times for England and had a spell in the MLS with Toronto FC.

Despite all of that experience, he’s still been blown away by the sports science team at Rangers, amid the current suspension of the Scottish Premiership.

“The club have done wonders to be honest,” Defoe told Talksport. “The sports science is on another level. Jordan Milsom is unbelievable. He was at Liverpool with the manager.”

“We have an app where all the players have individual programmes and everything goes back to the sports science team so they know what exactly what we are doing.”

Defoe has been in the game for a long time and the technology available these days would have been unthinkable when he made his West Ham debut in 1999.

It’s encouraging to see that even he is impressed by the tools available, though, as well as the staff who are putting together programmes and combing through the statistics.

It doesn’t look likely that there’ll be any football played for quite some time, but with Defoe following on from James Tavernier’s comments earlier in the week, it’s clear Rangers want to be thoroughly prepared in case circumstances change unexpectedly.

The forward suffered an injury blow in early 2020, but has still had a good season in front of goal, netting 17 times in 32 appearances in all competitions.
