Greg Stewart has spoken to the Daily Record ahead of the start of the 2019/20 season.
The Gers’ first competitive fixture is taking place in Gibraltar this evening, with the 29-year-old likely to be involved in some way.
He scored an excellent first goal for his new club in a friendly against Oxford United on Sunday. He also notched an impressive assist for Daniel Candeias’ opener and generally looked lively.

Stewart puts that down to hard work and discipline during the summer break. Although, those are things he admits he hasn’t always signed up to in the past.

New arrival feeling sharp

“We were all given off-season plans from the fitness coaches so I made sure I kept on top of that so I could prepare myself as much as possible coming into the new campaign,” said Stewart, as quoted by the Daily Record. “You can’t really return in bad shape anymore, it is not like back in the day where you could be a few stone overweight.”
“I have learned my lesson from that previously. I won’t do that again. You learn from your failures so I tried to prepare myself as best as possible this time around. I am just looking forward to the games coming thick and fast and I was delighted that I managed to get off the mark at the weekend.
“It was my main aim when I knew I was starting against Oxford because you want to score as soon as possible when you come to a new team. The chance to write my own chapter at this club? That’s the chance that I have been given. Every chance I get I want to grasp it.”

Verdict

As a Rangers fan, Stewart was always going to be extra determined to make a success of his move to Ibrox.
Some Bears have been critical of his signing, but he impressed plenty with is performance against Oxford.
It will be interesting to see how regularly he starts games this season. We don’t have him in our starting XI for this evening’s clash against St Joseph’s, but if he gets a chance, he’ll be wanting to get his competitive Gers career off on the right foot.
