The Rangers left-back position seemed like one that was going to be hotly  contested this season but Borna Barisic has stolen a march on Ridvan Yilmaz.

As the more experienced of the two, the Croatian international has started every competitive game apart from the most recent one against Morton.

Now, Rangers are being tipped to give Borna Barisic an extension to his time at the club by transfer journalist Dean Jones, as told to GiveMeSport.

Rangers future could be made clearer for Borna Barisic

Rangers fans probably thought that Borna Barisic would be one of the players sold this summer given his contract status and links with a move, however, Jones reckons that their could be a twist:

“It’s hard to tell what will happen with Barisic. It’s a rollercoaster ride whenever he’s involved. And clearly, some fans would probably prefer that he moved on at this point.

“But it’s a rocky ride, as I say, and I’m always a bit cautious about writing him off at Rangers because he always tends to bite back and buy himself another year.”

The 30-year old has just a year left on his current contract but is showing signs again that he could be a useful asset for Michael Beale.

As with James Tavernier, how Rangers set up has a direct link with how Barisic plays.

If he is isolated at both ends of the park, he can struggle, if he didn’t, he wouldn’t be in the Scottish Premiership.

When he has the right set up and system to get the most out of him we see results like the one against Servette.

In four games this season for Rangers, Borna Barisic has three assists and has been a key provider in a team that has yet to start clicking.

He might have his weaknesses, however, he remains one of the best crossers of the ball that the club has ever seen.

Imagine if Mark Hateley was still around.

Had Ridvan Yilmaz been able to play against Morton, there might have been a discussion ahead of the Old Firm derby on the 3rd of September but, with two games against PSV Eindhoven to play too, there is almost no chance of Beale throwing him in.

The best the 22-year old can hope for is time against Ross County to give Barisic a break.

Rangers have a few problems that need to be ironed out just now but a new contract for Borna Barisic still wouldn’t be a surprise.
