Former Rangers attacker Lafferty registers assist as Sarpsborg off bottom

Former Rangers attacker Kyle Lafferty made his first tangible contribution to the Sarpsborg cause on Sunday.

The 32-year-old joined the struggling Norwegian Eliteserien outfit at the end of August, having been released by Rangers earlier in the summer.

However, things could scarcely have got off to a worse start.

With his side 2-0 up against FK Viking on his debut, Lafferty was sent off for a second bookable offence and a late rally from the opposition secured them an unlikely point.

He served a one-match suspension following the September international break and has since made two appearances either side of a 0-0 draw against Stabaek, when he was absent from the squad altogether.

It’s been far from a stunning success story, but while he’s yet to score for his new club, he can finally say he’s helped them on the way to a big win.

The rangy striker registered an assist for teammate Kristoffer Larsen’s opening goal at the weekend, as Sarpsborg defeated Ranheim TF away from home.

It was just a fourth win from 24 matches and crucially, it lifts them off joint-bottom and out of the relegation zone into 13th [Soccerbase].

With just six games remaining in both the season and on Lafferty’s deal, let’s hope this kickstarts some form for the ex-Ibrox attacker.

He has the opportunity to state his case for a bigger move ahead of the January transfer window, but he needs goals in order to attract attention.

His last competitive strike came for the Gers at Hamilton way back in February.

Despite his recent lack of form, though, he’s currently on international duty and could play a part for Northern Ireland against the Netherlands in a Euro 2020 qualifier this evening.
