The two were talking on BBC Scotland’s Scottish Football Podcast after the sacking of Giovanni van Bronckhorst at Ibrox.
The Dutchman has been relieved of his duties in Glasgow after stuttering league form leaves the club nine points behind in the title race with the Champions League humiliation fresh in the memory.
Kevin Thomson and Tom English were giving their insight and opinion on the matter and also discussing who might be next up to take the reins at Rangers.
But amid something of a ramble Kevin Thomson was quick to disagree with Tom English and sent the outspoken journalist scrambling by giving a sense of perspective regarding the Rangers job.
Kevin Thomson guts Tom English after Rangers rambling
English was claiming that Rangers will have a job convincing a new manager regarding the club’s budget and because they are nine points behind Celtic, whilst Thomson claimed if this any prospective candidate’s focus, then they aren’t the man for the club.
“The question that all of these guys will be asking is, ‘what is the budget?’”, said English.
“‘Because Celtic, they’ve got plenty of money in the bank, they can go again in January, they already have a good team, and our team is old and uninspired and we need to get players out and in, how much am I playing with here?’”
Kevin Thomson then snapped back.
“See if I’m at the top of Rangers, and someone had they doubts and wanted to know about the budget and wanted to know about this and that, they’re not the man for the job,” said Thomson.
“It’s not the mentality you need to succeed at Rangers. You get that opportunity to go back and work at Rangers or Celtic, you ain’t knocking it back.
”If you’re knocking it back because of budgets or because Celtic are nine points clear, you ain’t the right man for the Rangers job.”
Tom English then tried to put words in the mouth of Kevin Thomson by suggesting the ex-Rangers midfielder was suggesting Gerrard didn’t ask about budgets before he joined as manager.
Thomson then pointed to Walter Smith returning to the club after Paul le Guen and turning the club around on a shoestring budget, with English then scrambling to retort as his cheeks somehow audibly reddened.
A defensive English then begins rambling about Rangers selling Calvin Bassey and Joe Aribo as Kevin Thomson completely rips him a new one and honestly it’s a desperate listen and we’ve got to give Thommo the kudos for speaking his mind and sticking to his guns.
It shows the difference between those who work in football and outspoken pundits and seriously, if you haven’t heard it, it’s worth listening to the podcast just to hear Kevin Thomson completely dissect Tom English.
