Hertha Berlin striker Davie Selkie turned down a summer move to Rangers in order to stay and fight for his place with the Bundesliga club in the final year of his contract.

That’s according to Bild in Germany, who quote the Ibrox side as being amongst the frontrunners for the 27-year-old’s signature in the last window.

The German outlet is claiming that Rangers were battling the likes of West Brom, FC Basel and Copenhagen in the hunt for Davie Selke but in the end no move materialised.

The striker netted four goals in 25 Bundesliga games last season, and it is being claimed Selke aimed to see out his contract in the German capital instead of moving on in the summer.

However so far the forward’s gametime for Hertha has been limited, with the striker starting only two games this season, scoring in the penalty kicks DFB Pokal defeat to Eintracht Braunschweig.

Davie Selkie turned down Rangers move

Davie Selkie has been at Hertha Berlin since the summer of 2017 with the striker starting his career at Werder Bremen.

The former Germany youth international impressed so much with the German outfit he actually earned a record-breaking £7m (€8m) transfer to RB Leipzig in 2015.

This transfer fee is a Bundesliga 2 record and shows how highly the striker was thought of earlier in his career and perhaps why Rangers were keeping tabs on his development.

It’ll be interesting to see if Rangers reignite their Davie Selke interest in January when the player enters the final six months of his contract but for the time being the club has invested in the striker position.

With the Gers entering the season with injuries to Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe, the club spent £1.8m to bring Antonio Colak to Ibrox from PAOK.

So far the Croatian striker has had an impressive start to his Ibrox career, netting nine goals in 13 appearances for the club and winning over initially cautious Rangers fans.

Meanwhile, here are the three former Rangers players who’ve lifted the World Cup.
