New Rangers first-team coach Roy Makaay has sent an Instagram message to supporters as he prepares to join the Ibrox club’s backroom staff.

Makaay, 46, worked with new Ibrox manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst at Feyenoord and joins fitness guru Arno Phillips and video analyst Yuri Bosschart on a new Dutch staffing structure.

There is one more role to fill at Ibrox but in the meantime, these four from the Netherlands will look to bring their experience onboard and galvanise a squad that is clearly lacking leadership.

A former Bayern Munich, Deportivo la Coruna, and Feyenoord hitman – who also made 43 appearances for the Dutch national team – Roy Makaay will work with the strikers at the club.

A cult forward who remains massively respected in the game, Roy will be tasked with getting the best from Alfredo Morelos, Kemar Roofe, and Fashion Sakala.

Makaay is clearly delighted to be involved at Ibrox as he took to social media to claim that he is “grateful” for the chance to work with the side.

“Very proud to announce I’ll be joining the new Rangers FC coaching staff,” said Makaay [Instagram].

“Grateful for the opportunity and looking forward to working with the team.”

Rangers want to add more than Roy Makaay to club’s backroom staff

The club’s backroom staff was a topic of debate as Giovanni van Bronckhorst was unveiled to the media and the Dutchman admitted that he was looking to add another to his backroom staff.

There remains much conjecture surrounding van Bronckhorst’s traditional number two Jean Paul van Gastel but the Dutchman is determined to add to his staff.

“I would like to add one more member of the backroom staff. We are working hard with Ross in achieving that,” said GVB [Rangers].

“I want quality in my backroom staff as well and hopefully we can announce an addition to the staff in the next days or weeks.”

According to a club media partner, Rangers do have a target for the role and reports suggest the Ibrox club could benefit from financial issues at the coach’s current side.
