Steven Gerrard has confirmed that an announcement is close on contract extensions for two key Rangers players, Steven Davis and Allan McGregor, as quoted by the Scotsman.

“They are more imminent [than his own prospective deal extension],” said the Gers boss. “It’s just a case of when we announce them. They are both to players I want around and they deserve new contracts. They have both been very consistent this season. It was a no brainer, from where I’m sitting, to extend those two.”

Could these be the most important pieces of transfer business this season?

Quite possibly.

With a combined age of 71, these two are no spring chickens.

Yet, they are both genuinely quality operators who occupy key positions and each possesses a wealth of experience.

Between the sticks, McGregor has barely put a foot wrong since he returned to the club in the summer of 2018. His shot-stopping continues to wow the Ibrox faithful on a weekly basis and he’s as good a last line of defence as Steven Gerrard could ask for.

As for Davis, the maestro has looked back to his very best this season. After a rocky start to his second spell following a January arrival, he’s been consistently outstanding with his passing and decision-making in midfield.

By securing the short-term futures of these two players, the club are ensuring they have two spots in the XI filled by top performers.

Perhaps an even more important asset that they bring, though, is the experience of winning things. Not just for any club, but with Rangers.

The Gers won eleven trophies during McGregor’s first stint and eight during Davis’. At a time when Gerrard is looking for leaders to show the others how to get over the line and land silverware, the nouse that these two have may prove key.

Ahead of a January window where the club are likely to trim the squad rather than recruiting heavily, these two contract extensions could well be the most important of all player dealings.
