There is some confusion surrounding claims Rangers have offered a new deal or are set to agree a new contract with veteran goalkeeper Allan McGregor.

The early part of Rangers’ summer has been dominated with talks surrounding new contracts as the club sign up Scott Arfield, Steven Davis and Connor Goldson.

Leon Balogun has been let go alongside Andy Firth with the club reportedly looking to refresh rather than rebuild the squad this summer.

But the situation surrounding Allan McGregor is yet to be decided with no official announcement made regarding the future of the 40-year-old veteran stopper.

This alone is enough to raise suspicions regarding a potential new deal.

Conflicting reports surround Allan McGregor Rangers contract talk

Now, the Herald and reputable journalist Chris Jack are claiming that Allan McGregor is set to sign on for another season at Rangers.

The report claims the veteran stopper is not ready to hang up his gloves and that Rangers will agree a new deal regarding his future.

The Herald also suggest that the decision will also give McGregor the opportunity to move into coaching if he so desires.

This follows on from a Daily Record report claiming McGregor had “kicked off” contract talks and that the deal would include a Jermain Defoe-esque coaching aspect.

But this report has been cut down by Ibrox club media partners Heart & Hand and namely stand-in host Adam Thornton.

Speaking as part of the platform’s Daily Update for 07/06/22, Thornton claims “our understanding is that this is untrue as things stand”.

“McGregor is off on holiday,” said Thornton.

“I believe there have been mentions in the past that a coaching career isn’t exactly something that appeals to Allan McGregor.

“I would park that one as paper talk during a quiet close season, for now. Who knows how things will go.

“Our understanding is that there is no fresh contract offer on the table at the moment.”

This is just conjecture, but perhaps the Herald report merely points to Allan McGregor making the decision to play again whilst Heart & Hand are saying technically Rangers are yet to offer him a new contract.

Time will tell.

McGregor has been a monumental figure in Rangers’ modern history and for some is the club’s greatest ever goalkeeper, something solidified by his Player of the Year award in the 55-winning unbeaten season.

However, last season there were plenty of grumbles as some high-profile mistakes contributed to a downturn in domestic form with many asking the question regarding potential retirement.

Whatever the case, there appears to be some consensus that even if Allan McGregor does sign on again this season it’s perhaps time to begin phasing Jon McLaughlin into the number one slot.

Meanwhile, Rangers have been handed a devastating player blow despite claims regarding the Europa League Final.
