Celtic-esque Rangers manager move is disaster waiting to happen

As the hunt for the next Rangers manager begins, links to Kevin Muscat a la Celtic and Ange Postecoglou are already grabbing headlines.

The Australian manager, 50, has successfully taken over from the now Tottenham Hotspur boss at Japanese side Yokohama F Marinos and spent a season at Ibrox in his playing career.

Now seemingly interested in taking the reins at Rangers, it’s being reported that Kevin Muscat is open to becoming the new manager at Ibrox following the sacking of Michael Beale.

Couple this with suggestions that Kevin Muscat is on a shortlist of managers Rangers want to talk to about the vacant Ibrox role and suddenly there appears a little fire to the smoke

Kevin Muscat a Rangers disaster waiting to happen

Whilst Kevin Muscat might’ve proven his pedigree in Australia and Japan, the Rangers job is certainly a different one altogether and I have major reservations that the coach is the man to fill the role.

Not least because by following in Celtic’s footsteps the Rangers Board open themselves up to immense criticism in the face of unthinkable failure.

Kevin Muscat’s lack of experience in Europe also massively counts against him and as interesting as the manager might be, it’s too big a risk for Rangers to seriously consider.

Whilst no managerial appointment can be guaranteed, the Rangers board must be absolutely certain of the next man they appoint and there is already enough doubt surrounding Kevin Muscat to potentially rule him out of the running.

For me, Rangers need a solution a little a closer to home, or at least from the continent, and someone with a pedigree, style and presence which the players will respect.

Kevin Muscat might be a name which is doing the rounds at Rangers but I’ll be amazed if the Ibrox club stump up to sign someone because our rivals did similar successfully.

If Muscat was to get the job therefore, this suggests it would be on merit, but there’s a lot in the background which doesn’t make us too confident Rangers will pounce.
