Rangers could be set for a Premier League Calvin Bassey windfall amid reports that a bid has landed for the Ajax defender ahead of the summer window.

The 23-year-old Nigerian international defender left Ibrox in the summer, with the Gers striking a reported £23m deal with the Eredivisie champions under Ross Wilson.

That move is an outgoing club transfer record but as the season has developed things haven’t exactly gone to plan for Calvin Bassey at Ajax and now there is talk of a bid from the Premier League.

Amid a season of big changes at the Amsterdam Arena, Calvin Bassey has often been the scapegoat for poor performances and stumbling league form which sees Ajax 3rd in the Dutch top flight.

Calvin Bassey ‘subject to Premier League bid’

Now, Dutch pundit Mike Verweij is claiming that Ajax could be set to recoup the money they paid for Calvin Bassey as a £20m (€23m) bid from an unnamed Premier League side lands for the ex-Rangers star.

“To my amazement, a bid of 23 million euros has been received for Calvin Bassey,” said Verweij told Telesport, which is a podcast run by De Telegraaf in the Netherlands.

“It’s from the English Premier League. I don’t know which club.

“And by the way, some people at Ajax think that he can be sold one day for 40 million Euros.

“I don’t know which club it was, although it won’t have been one in the top five.

“On the one hand, there’s a lot of constructive criticism that has come in for Calvin Bassey this season.

“But also, if you look at him defensively, I can imagine there’s interest from clubs.

“And for English clubs, he would be a good signing too because of the homegrown rules.”

Rangers fans will have an interest in what happens with any Calvin Bassey bid due to a potential sell-on fee which was negotiated during Ross Wilson’s tenure.

The Glasgow Times have suggested that Rangers stand to bank 10% of any transfer fee meaning the club stand to potentially make £2m on any Premier League switch.

As for who the club might be, Calvin Bassey has been linked with Everton and a potential reunion with Nathan Patterson at Goodison Park.
