Former Rangers player Mikel Arteta has revealed he is still a fan of the club he represented for two years between 2002-2004.

The current Arsenal manager still obviously takes great pride in having represented the club and he will forever be remembered as the person who scored the goal that won Rangers their 50th league title in 2003.

Arteta was speaking to Sky Sports about Steven Gerrard’s move to Aston Villa when he began talking about the Ibrox side and what Gerrard achieved with them.

“As a Rangers fan I must say thank you so much to Stevie and the coaching staff for what they did for the club,” said Arteta.

“To manage to win the league in the way they did it obviously was a big boost.

“And now I wish the best to Giovanni and the club. We’ll see what happens.”

It was a lovely touch by the former Rangers player and it shows how much the club means to him to this day.

The Spaniard joined the club in the summer of 2002 and was a key part the treble-winning team that season, although his second campaign was less successful and he moved to Real Sociedad that summer.

After an unsuccessful spell in Spain, he joined Everton before finishing off his career at Arsenal, where he won two FA Cups.

Although the Gunners started off the season in terrible fashion, they have rebounded quickly under the 39-year-old, and he could well have a bright managerial future.

Could we see him taking over the reins at Rangers one day? Who knows, but I’m sure it would prove to be a popular appointment.

Meanwhile, it’s possible that Niko Katic could be recalled by Rangers due to the defensive problems the side is facing.
