Reports coming out of Africa have claimed that Rangers are set to offer Ugandan teenager Alex Yiga a trial as he looks to win a life-changing contract at Ibrox.

Alex Yiga – who is still in secondary school – is described as a creative midfielder who currently turns out at Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Soccer Academy.

The Gers have flown the 16-year-old midfielder from his home country to be assessed over the next period with Alex Yiga being joined by two of his compatriots in Scotland.

Premiership rivals Dundee United will take a look at Soltilo Bright Stars midfielder Ivan Irinimbabazi whilst St Mirren have offered an opportunity to Proline attacker Hakim Kiwanuka.

All three players come to Scotland under the stewardship of Festoweb Sports Management, an agency working out of Uganda, with intermediary Herbert Ella Angura joining the boys on their journey.

The trial is also a pretty big deal in Uganda – as reported by Kawawo – with all three players being waved off by local MP Fredrick Angura and the mother of Alex Yiga giving an emotional parting message to her son.

“I have always encouraged my sons to play football,” said the mother of Alex Yiga.

“Yiga has been on a bursary scheme since he was in primary school. I pray he succeeds in this career to uplift the family.”

Alex Yiga thanks Rangers for the opportunity

Hailing from Busunjju, another Kawawo story hails Alex Yiga as an “exceptional talent”, describing him as a two-footed midfielder blessed with impressive creative talents and a trick or two with the ball at his feet.

Speaking to the publication, the midfielder – who was first identified as a talented footballer at six-years-old – thanked Rangers for the opportunity and appears focused on making an impact at Ibrox.

“I am happy for the opportunity to have trials at Rangers Football Club in Scotland,” said Alex Yiga.

“I want to thank and appreciate all the people in my life who have helped me in one way or another to achieve this from my mother, brothers and sisters, all the coaches, KCCA Soccer Academy, Dynamic SS, Festoweb Sports Management and everybody, I am indeed humbled.

“I want to thank Rangers Football Club for the opportunity to have trials with them. This is a golden blessing in life that I want to utilize well. I will work so hard, remain disciplined and composed at all times.”

Rangers will be hoping that Alex Yiga can make an impression at the club and should the Ugandan midfielder win a deal he’ll follow an ex-Chelsea youngster into the Ibrox youth setup.

Alex Kpakpe joined Rangers in January with the Ibrox club offering the defender a trial before signing him on a short-term deal.
