When Steven Davis moved to Rangers on loan from Southampton in January, I was convinced it was a veritable masterstroke.
The 34-year-old midfielder had everything you could wish for in a signing. Experience, quality and a proven track record of success for the very club he was rejoining.

It has to be said, though, for the first few months, his performances were underwhelming.
For a while, I wondered if Mark Hughes had got it right at Southampton after all. At 34, could Davis be over the hill?
Yet, since he has worked himself up to match fitness, he’s allayed any such fears.
Therefore, to go one step further and secure his services on a one-year deal last week, was both a no brainer and a coup for the club.
Even though the window is yet to officially open, it’s going to take some beating as the signing of the summer.
We are talking about a player with 108 international caps and 306 Premier League appearances. Furthermore, he has winners medals from eight major competitions from his first stint at Ibrox.
Players with that kind of pedigree are extremely hard to find.

What’s more, there are now zero risks attached to this signing.
Gerrard knows Davis still has what it takes. He looked a class apart against Hibernian on Sunday and with a full preseason under his belt, there’s sure to be more of that ahead.
This is transfer business at its peak and if the Gers capture title no.55 next season, rest assured Steven Davis will have played a huge part in it.
