Rangers shouldn't be tempted by free agent after Aston Villa release

On Monday, Aston Villa reached an agreement with Ross McCormack to terminate his contract a year early [BBC Sport].
The 32-year-old is a player of some pedigree.
He has 13 international caps and is the top scorer in the history of the Championship. He proved his worth at big clubs like Leeds United and Fulham before moving to Aston Villa for a reported £12 million [BBC Sport].

Often, when a player of that stature becomes available on a free, the Gers look to pounce.
For example, Premier League veterans Scott Arfield and Gareth McAuley were brought in on frees last summer.
If Rangers were interested in McCormack, there would be the added bonus of history with the player.

However, right now, McCormack is a player who should be avoided.
At his best, he would be a real asset at Ibrox, but for one reason or another, those days look behind him.
The player himself admitted his stint at Villa was ‘a bit of a shambles’, but vowed to kick on when he joined Motherwell on loan in January [

McCormack struggling for fitness and form

Instead, you hardly would have noticed he was there. He made just three league appearances with fitness once again letting him down.
He did bang in 14 goals for Melbourne City on one of four loans away from Villa, but other than that, he’s barely produced anything of note since leaving Fulham three years ago.
Given his talent, it’s unlikely the Scottish international will be short of offers. Yet, at this stage in the Gerrard revolution, he constitutes too big a risk. Therefore, the Gers should look the other way.
