On Saturday, Football Insider reported that Rangers have ‘set their sights’ on Matty Willock.
The 22-year-old midfielder is set to become a free agent after Manchester United announced on Friday he was one of many players set to be released this summer.

It’s up to you as to whether or not you believe the intel, here.
However, what we would say is that if there’s any substance to this report, Rangers need to set their sights higher than someone like Willock.
Of course, when free agents become available, the Gers should be on the lookout. They have already capitalised on the expiring contracts of the likes of
Yet, that isn’t to say that just because someone is out of contract, Gerrard and co. must be interested.
Rangers have been linked with some audacious moves already this summer. There’s been talk of loan swoops for both Andre Gray [Scottish Herald] and £21m-valued Harry Wilson [Mirror]. It’s highly unlikely that either of those will come to fruition.

Willock not what Gerrard needs
However, contrastingly, surely the Gers have moved past the stage of years of rebuilding where someone like Willock may have been an attractive proposition.
Sure, he has two Premier League U21 winners medals [Transfermarkt] and was on the books of Manchester United. Yet, when you break it down, he has very little senior experience.
He has played in Scotland before, but with two much smaller clubs in St Johnstone and St Mirren. If he didn’t make a major impact with them, what suggests he could succeed at Ibrox? The club is also already coming down with central midfielders.

It’s never nice to see a young player let go by their club. However, the reality here is that Willock needs to find a new home where he can play regularly and therefore have a realistic chance of making it in the game.
Given his recent change in status, this seems a very convenient rumour. It’s likely there is no truth to it, but as a general point, Rangers need to be aiming higher than this.
Free agents are all well and good, but if the Gers want to really challenge for silverware next season, they need to add tried and tested quality.
