Rangers fans are well-used to Premier League exit links when it comes to manager Steven Gerrard but there’s little doubt the latest talk of Aston Villa has unsettled fans more than usual.
Links to Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace, Newcastle United, and even – wait for it – Everton, have all come and went without any club ever making a formal approach for the Gers gaffer.

But according to links down south – emanating from the Daily Mail in particular – Rangers are bracing themselves for an approach from Aston Villa.
Villains are sceptical about the suitability of the Rangers manager but how has the Ibrox support responded?
Rangers fans can be temperamental when it comes to Gerrard’s side – especially this season – but looking at the whole picture he’s held in remarkably high esteem at Ibrox.
No matter what anyone tries to say – particularly rivals trying to soothe the pain of Gerrard’s Rangers success – the job the man has done in Glasgow has been remarkable.
Steven Gerrard is a legend amongst fans for what he’s achieved at Rangers
Alongside his backroom staff – who are also reportedly on the Villa shortlist – Gerrard has transformed Rangers from a veritable laughingstock to a once-again established European side.
The Gers manager has led the transformation of the club’s infrastructure, built an asset-strewn squad on a budget, and overtaken our indulgent rivals in the process.
What’s more, Gerrard’s legend status is confirmed by the securing of 55 and the halting of Celtic’s admittedly bold claims to 10IAR.
Gerrard’s left an indelible mark at Rangers and his appointment – alongside the new regime taking control in 2015 – is the stand-out moment in the club’s Phoenix-like rise from the ashes of 2012.
Suggestions Gerrard has conquered all before him in Scotland are remarkably misleading; a domestic cup remains a target, as does a treble, and Rangers’ rebuild isn’t fully complete (if it ever will be) until the Champions League anthem rings out around the stadium.
This unfinished business has formed part of Rangers fan thinking as they muse over their manager potentially swapping Ibrox for Villa Park:
