Steven Gerrard handed summer signing Filip Helander his competitive Rangers debut against East Fife, on Sunday.
It’s a moment that came a little later than most expected when he arrived at the club in mid-July. That’s because the Gers forked out approximately £3 million for the Swedish international’s services [Evening Times].

Helander’s pedigree and price tag seemed to dictate that he would be Connor Goldson’s new first-choice centre-back partner for the 2019/20 season.
Yet, so far, that role has been taken up by Nikola Katic. The young Croatian has made six appearances to Helander’s one and was rested for the trip to East Fife.
Katic, who remains very popular with the Ibrox faithful, has defended commandingly for the most part and even scored an important Europa League qualifying goal on the road against Midtjylland.
Therefore, Helander knows he faces a battle to get into the side. Yet, it’s not something he appears to be phased by and he sent a message to the manager after the League Cup victory.
Rangers defender Filip Helander eyes up spot
“Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic have been playing well and scoring important goals, so it’s always hard for a manager to change things,” admitted the Swede, as quoted by the Scottish Sun. “I was delighted to get my chance. I hope to play every game, especially the big matches we have coming up in Europe and at home.
“The opponents today were maybe not at the same level as the ones to come, but I feel I am ready to play. I’ve played against big teams before.”

Verdict
Helander has made it abundantly clear that he’s ready to go if called upon on Thursday evening.
The Gers travel to Poland for the first leg of their European tie against Legia Warsaw and defensive solidity will be crucial.
That’s something that was definitely present on Sunday, against the third-tier minnows. Helander was composed and looked strong in the air.
However, it would be a big surprise if his performance was enough to displace Katic in midweek. He and Goldson have looked good together so far this season and will be well-rested heading into the tie.
Injury or a drop off in form from either is bound to hand Helander a run in the team down the line, but for now, despite his hefty fee, a return to the bench is probably the most likely outcome.
