Rangers look set to finish second in their quest for the Scottish Premiership title and failing to build on last season’s success, that’s according to American stats outlet FiveThirtyEight.

The website, which was founded by American statistician Nate Silver, has predicted the final Scottish Premiership table and the results aren’t looking good from a Rangers perspective, although many might wave the statistical analysis off with a shrug of the shoulders.

Rangers are predicted to finish second in the league table, two points behind Celtic

In percentage terms, Celtic have a 61% chance of winning the league compared to the 39% chance for Rangers. With Celtic finishing on 89 points and the Gers only two points behind on 87 points, the analysis has predicted what we all knew, there is a major title race on.

Another key outcome that was analysed was the respective team’s goal difference stats. With our Old Firm rivals finishing up on a goal difference of +57, with the Ibrox side once again trailing with a +47 goal difference.

Analysing the final league table from a statistical point of view is interesting, but it doesn’t account for the fact that anything can happen, especially in football.

With Celtic’s resurgent form being enough to overtake us in the league standings for the first time since August, all it takes is one defeat for the confidence to drop and Rangers to go on a run, and the pendulum swings again.

It is going to be a pulsating final three months of the season, with many twists and turns inevitable, it really is anyone’s guess who will end up winning the league. Although, with Gio’s new signings and the form of Alfredo Morelos, then it would take a brave man for anyone to write off the Gers.

Speaking of new signings, two of them could make their mark against Annan in the Scottish Cup tomorrow evening.
