Offering defender a two-year Rangers deal a major Gerrard error

Steven Gerrard has brought plenty of new faces into Ibrox since taking over the reins.
Some have worked out well. The likes of Connor Goldson, Ryan Kent and more recently, Glen Kamara, have when down well with the support base.

Others, are yet to set the world alight. For example, the two arrivals from Osijek – Borna Barisic and Eros Grezda – haven’t really got going.
However, perhaps the biggest transfer faux pas came in June.
Jon Flanagan signed for the club on a free.

A gamble that hasn’t paid off

He’d burst onto the scene as a teenager at former club Liverpool, and had then been a teammate of the now Gers manager.
Clearly, Gerrard felt he could do a job for him up in Scotland. That’s why he handed him a two-year contract.

However, he’s looked nothing like the player he was a few years back.
It’s not as if he’s passed it age-wise, he’s still only 26. Yet, injuries mixed in with a few off-field problems before the move seem to have robbed him of sharpness and confidence.

He’s made 23 appearances this season. However, only one of those has come in 2019.
Gerrard gave him one last go against Cowdenbeath, but when he didn’t impress it seems that was that.
The problem is, the length of his contract means the club are almost sure to be stuck with him until the end of next season.

He’s valued at £1.58 million by Transfermarkt, but unlikely there are going to be many teams lining up a summer bid given his performance levels.
While his wages will hardly be Pena-esque, it’s something an added expense the club could do without. Gerrard is probably rueing what looks like a misinformed gamble.
