Gerrard's late Rangers January deal looks like a waste of time

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers signed Matt Polster on a free on the eve of January’s transfer deadline day.
The USA international signed a two-and-a-half year contract and looked set to continue a proud tradition at the club.

However, right now, it’s looking like a waste of time.
This wasn’t hasty last-minute transfer.
Polster trialled with the Gers and took part in their midseason training camp in Tenerife before the club battled to secure him a work permit.

Considerable time and effort went into the move. Therefore, it seemed as though the manager was convinced that he could add a lot to the squad over the second half of the season.

Yet, the apparently versatile operator is still yet to make an appearance.
Initially, he had to build his way up to full fitness and then, he did suffer a minor groin injury.
However, he’s clearly been fit for some time now and he still isn’t getting a look in.

After the winter break, he talked up his chances of appearing in the Old Firm [Daily Record]. The reality? He didn’t make the squad.

On Wednesday night, the Gers were short on full-backs, so surely he’d at least be named in the 18?
No. Gerrard actually opted to take no cover at full-back, rather than including Polster or Lee Wallace.
If this trend continues, you have to wonder what the point was in going through the effort to bring him to the club.
Surely he needs to be given an opportunity, sooner rather than later.
