When Eros Grezda arrived at Rangers from Osijek, in August, it excited the club’s faithful.
However, the 23-year-old has experienced mixed fortunes so far at Ibrox. Nursing a niggle at the beginning of the season, he failed to make much of an impact early on.
Consequently, when Grezda scored a brace in November’s rout of Motherwell, it looked to represent a breakthrough moment.
Yet, he struggled to run with the momentum. Poor performances like the one at Dundee have been too regular, but promise was once again shown against Hamilton at the weekend.
For a winger finding it hard to establish himself at Rangers, he should look no further than Daniel Candeias as a role model.
The Portuguese is one of the few positive legacies of the Caixinha era. Under Gerrard, he has established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet each week.
A key reason for this, is that he always gives 100%. He chases lost causes and harries defenders relentlessly.
What’s more, he has started to consistently bring an end product to his game. The 30-year-old has notched four league goals this season. Important ones too.
Grezda needs consistency and end product
He is the player Grezda needs to aspire to become. By guaranteeing a certain level of energy each week, Candeias makes himself a low-risk selection.
Through adding goals to his game, he has now become indispensable.
Those are two areas Grezda is yet to master.
He may get another chance on the left against Hibs this evening, and it’s time to start adding to an underwhelming tally of goals and assists.
