As quoted by the Scottish Sun, Steven Gerrard had big praise for Jermain Defoe, following Sunday’s hammering of Hibernian.

The striker netted the first three goals as the Gers hit six in a commanding performance at Ibrox. It was a display which suggested the Light Blues now have the potency to match Celtic.

Defoe’s sharp finishing had Rangers 2-0 up after 15 minutes, and after several close shaves, he completed his hattrick in the 75th.

Could Rangers marksman Defoe land fresh deal?

At 36, he’s the oldest player in the side, but his manager doesn’t think this will be his final season.

“I get the age thing,” said Gerrard, as quoted by the Scottish Sun. “But, for me, the important thing is how you feel. How old is your body.”

“If you’ve never touched a drop of alcohol in your life and are as hungry as Jermain Defoe, age never comes into my thinking.

It’s clear Gerrard already has his eye on keeping Defoe in Glasgow beyond this campaign. He’ll be 37 in two months, which makes it remarkable how fresh he looked at Ibrox on Sunday.

Relatively injury-free since he joined back in January, there are no signs of wear and tear, nor does he look like losing his touch in front of goal. An extra year makes sense.

However, for now, at least, Defoe’s future isn’t under Rangers’ control.

He’s still on loan from Bournemouth, with the Cherries able to recall him, should they see fit, in January.

Therefore, the Gers will have to wait until next summer, when Defoe is a free agent, to negotiate any additional deal.

The early signs are good, but let’s see how he stands up to the rigours of a title race and a European run. If he keeps banging them in, he could have his first-ever league winners medal by May 2020.
