When Jermain Defoe signed for Rangers in January, it whipped up quite a storm amongst the fans.
The 57-cap England international was a marquee signing, the type of player the Gers haven’t attracted for years.

However, it was a loan move, so Gerrard and co. don’t have total control over his future.
As it was an 18-month deal, he should still have 12 months left at Ibrox. However, his parent club, Bournemouth, have the option to recall him both this summer and in January 2020 [Sky Sports].

Cherries boss, Eddie Howe, previously refused to be drawn on his intentions. He said that a decision would only be made come the end of the season.

“We’re so engrossed in what we’re doing here that we haven’t sat down to discuss anything on that side yet,” he told the Bournemouth Echo.
“It’s one for the summer, but I am pleased to see Jermain doing so well.”

Holding onto Defoe is key

It’s now almost a month since Bournemouth finished their Premier League campaign with a 5-3 defeat at Crystal Palace. Yet, there’s still been no word on Defoe.
There’s no suggestion Howe had been intrigued by the 36-year-old’s end of season form and no reports of Rangers fearing losing the loanee.

That can only be good news for Steven Gerrard.
A former international teammate of Defoe’s, he believed the veteran could make a difference at Ibrox. It took him a while to get fully up to speed, but he excelled when given the chance to lead the line in April and May.
Particularly as Alfredo Morelos’ future is uncertain, it’s important the club hang onto Defoe for 2019/20. He’s still razor sharp in front of goal and his experience is invaluable for the dressing room.
