A replacement for Wes Foderingham in January wouldn’t be necessary

One thing Rangers shouldn’t need to taken into consideration in January is Wes Foderingham’s replacement.

The Rangers goalkeeper has been linked with Leeds United over the last few days. The Championship club are looking to find a replacement for their two crocked goalkeepers – Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Jamal Blackman.

Rangers aren’t in a position where they have to sell the Mark Warburton signing. Steven Gerrard confirmed none of his stars will go for anything other than top dollar before the season began.

Whilst Foderingham doesn’t come under the bracket of top stars, Rangers don’t need to sell. The former Swindon Town goalkeeper arrived in the summer of 2015, and has been at the club ever since. His contract also runs until 2020.

Should Rangers receive an offer they deem acceptable from Leeds, or anyone else for that matter, it wouldn’t mean a rush would need to be on for a replacement either.

With Jak Alnwick scheduled to come back in January, sending unnecessary transfer fees and wages on a third goalkeeper wouldn’t be worth it. The reason being because Rangers have a couple of youngsters available to be third choice.

A youth star for third choice?

It may be a tad too early for young Aidan McAdams to make the step up, but Robby McCrorie is ready. The youngster has been honing his craft with Graeme Murty’s Under-20s, and has been in the Ibrox youth academy since 2013. A few appearances here and there in the first team would be the next logical step for his development.

It’s worth bearing in mind the fact that McCrorie, or whoever is third choice, most likely wouldn’t feature regardless. Therefore, why spend money on a third-choice goalkeeper that wouldn’t be required?

Rangers have sufficient depth in McGregor and Alnwick should Foderingham go. There are areas of the team where recruitment could be made more wisely made than between the sticks.

Of course, it could all be irrelevant. Leeds may not make a move for Foderingham, and clubs may be put off by the fact the Englishman has only featured three times for Rangers this year.

Whatever happens in January, however, a replacement isn’t necessary.
