Rangers U16s got their SuperCup NI campaign off to a fantastic start on Monday.
They defeated County Armagh 6-0 in their opening fixture at the compact Riada Stadium in Ballymoney.
It’s early in the season, but there were no signs of rustiness from the Young Gers who set about their task well in the early stages.
Conor Allan notched the first of three first-half goals, before Leyton Dunlop and Robbie Ure ensured they had a comfortable advantage at the interval.
In the second period, Dire Mebude, younger brother of Dapo, got himself in on the act.
He came on at half-time and notched a brace either side of a strike from fellow substitute Thomas Lonergan.
Rangers U16s shine in Ulster
Plenty of goals and a clean sheet for the U16s, then, in an ideal start to the prestigious competition.
“It was great to get off to a good start,” coach Brian Gilmour told the Rangers website. “For the boys, it is about the challenge and hopefully the first of five games in five days.”
“We are happy with the performance, we got off to a good start with two early goals and that settled the boys into the game so we are really chuffed with game one.”
Next up, they face English opposition in the form of Bracknell Town. They lost their first fixture 2-0 to County Tyrone, so the young Gers should be confident of securing a second consecutive victory.
The fixtures come thick and fast in this tournament and it’s a great chance for the young players to compete for silverware. We’ll keep an eye on how they get on over the coming days.
