Rangers U16s overcame the heartbreak of the weekend’s defeat in the Istria Youth Cup final to triumph over Aberdeen on Wednesday afternoon.

The squad had come close to making it three pieces of silverware in as many months, by making it to the last two of the Croatia-based tournament after defeating Benfica, LA Galaxy and Udinese in the group stages.

They were outplayed in Saturday’s final, though, losing 4-0 to Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg.

However, impressively, the Young Gers were able to dust themselves off in time to travel to Aberdeen for a league match, just four days later.

Things started well, with the prolific Robbie Ure netting from the spot after being felled in the penalty area.

The hosts weren’t going to lie down, though, and they got back on level terms before half-time, before taking the lead in the second period.

As the game went on, the U16s looked set for a second consecutive disappointing result, but they pulled off something special in the latter stages.

Robbie Ure scored his second after being picked out by a Leyton Dunlop pass, before a Connor Allen header on the stroke of full time secured a thrilling comeback and all three points.

Encouraging character shown by this age group, then, who continue to score goals and register wins.

After an outstanding start to the season, they already have the SuperCup NI and the Albim Cup trophies to show for their efforts, with the likes of Ure and Dire Mebude scoring with regularity.
