Rangers dispatch Celtic in Scottish Youth Cup mauling

Rangers dispatched Celtic 5-0 to progress to the third round in an embarrassing Scottish Youth Cup mauling for the Hoops at Broadwood on Sunday afternoon.

The Gers starting XI contained several members of the Colts team that have made such waves in the Challenge Cup this season, and perhaps aided by those experiences, they were far too strong for their Glasgow rivals.

Highly-rated defender, Leon King, opened the scoring in the 26th minute, with a well-struck drive from the edge of the area.

The lead remained a slender one until after the interval when the floodgates really opened.

Former Chelsea academy player Nathan Young-Coombes, who has impressed since making the switch from the Premier League giants in January, doubled the advantage in the 59th minute by tapping in Kai Kennedy’s cross.

Substitute, Ross McCausland, then made it 3-0 just after the hour mark, putting the result beyond all doubt.

The Young Gers didn’t stop there, though, ruthlessly adding two further goals in the final stages.

The influential Kennedy grabbed the fourth with a curling effort from the edge of the area before captain Ciaran Dickson completed the scoring two minutes from time.

An emphatic win then for Rangers in what was a repeat of last season’s Youth Cup final.

Having laid down a marker like this, other clubs around the country are bound to be fearful of facing the Gers as the competition progresses.
