Rangers Head of Academy Craig Mulholland has confirmed that the Gers will receive a “further return” from Chelsea after Billy Gilmour made his Scotland debut.

The Premier League star has enjoyed a hugely successful few years and capped off a Champions League-winning season with a call-up to the national team for Euro 2020.

Still only 19, Gilmour is one of the country’s brightest talents in a generation and made his Scotland debut in the 2-2 draw with Holland ahead of the tournament.

Gilmour remains highly thought of in Govan and even more so given his continuing achievements are benefitting the club financially.

“The deal we got was a significant number at the time and has some more significant add-ons after that, which are a positive for Rangers,” said Mulholland [The Athletic].

“It has a really good sell-on so every time he does well with Chelsea or makes his debut for Scotland, for example, there is a further return for Rangers which justifies the investment in the academy.

“It’s not part of the business model we ever want as we want to retain our best talent and get them to the first team as there is even more value there but in every academy in the world, we will always have players leave as part of player trading.”

Despite the player’s rise at Chelsea, since the appointment of German manager Thomas Tuchel the young Scottish midfielder has found himself on the fringes of the Stamford Bridge squad.

This has led to the Sun claiming that Billy Gilmour is “considering” a loan move away from the Blues next season with the Daily Mail claiming the player has asked to go out next season.

The Sun claims that Gilmour hopes to follow in the footsteps of Mason Mount – who excelled during a year at Derby County – before becoming a first-team regular.

Rangers have been routinely linked to Gilmour throughout his career and were said to have been put on “alert” after questions arose regarding the midfielder’s loan future in January.

Gilmour isn’t the only Gers Academy graduate who has made the Scotland squad with another already catching the eye of supporters.
