On Tuesday evening, Rangers Colts defeated Berwick Rangers in the First Round of the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Cup.
Goals from the impressive Dapo Mebude and Josh McPake were enough on the night, despite the opposition causing a late scare.

Overall, while the performance wasn’t perfect, coach Graeme Murty was pleased by what he saw.
“It was a good test,” the Colts coach told RangersTV. “We played some really really good stuff then we got a bit slack and got involved in stuff that we didn’t need to be involved in but it is a good lesson for our young players getting through a round in a competition that we have failed to get through the first round in the last couple of years so they managed that very well.”

The reward for progression to the Second Round is another tough-looking away trip.
This time, the Colts’ opposition steps up a notch from a League Two side to a League One outfit, in the shape of Stranraer. That gulf in quality between those two sides was clear to see in the group stages of the League Cup when The Blues hammered Berwick 6-0.

When you factor in that this is another lengthy trip to a venue, in Stair Park, which is exposed to the elements, this looks a big ask for the young Gers.
The powers that be at Ibrox are keen for the club’s best talent to challenge themselves against men on a regular basis, though, and this tie offers a further opportunity to prove they can mix it.
After a week on the training ground to iron out a few imperfections, let’s hope Murty’s men can deliver another victory.
