Rangers Women coach opens up on 'special' meeting with Gers icon

Rangers Women face Aberdeen at Ibrox this weekend in a historic fixture as they take to the pitch at the iconic stadium for the first time – and head coach Malky Thomson has opened up on an unexpected visit from Gers legend Graeme Souness in the build-up to the SWPL1 clash.

The Light Blues squad were at the stadium ahead of their meeting with the Dons and bumped into Souness who took time to pass on some advice to the SWPL1 leaders.

Thomson was delighted that Souness spoke to his players, calling it a “special” moment for him and the squad as they look forward to the historic clash.

“Rangers Football Club is a fantastic club and the type of people that have come in through the doors as players and managers, you’re talking about a legend there,” Thomson said.

“He gave up a bit of his time to talk to the girls and it was really a special moment, not just for myself but for everybody at the club – none more so than the girls.

“It was special and it was by chance, believe it or not, that he happened to be at Ibrox so that was great.”

Rangers Women hold a five-point lead at the top of SWPL1 over Glasgow City as the season nears its conclusion – and City look like not being crowned champions for the first time in 14 years.

After major investment in the women and girls side of the club, Rangers look to be starting to reap the rewards.
