Rangers have been busy in the transfer market this summer with a number of new faces arriving at Ibrox and Steven Gerrard hinting at more – but the player links have reached a new peak for ridiculousness after the Gers were linked with a move for ex-Celtic winger Patrick Roberts.

According to French site Sqenf Football, the Gers are interested in signing Roberts on loan from Manchester City after he spent last season at Norwich City then Middlesbrough.

Since leaving Celtic, Roberts’ career has been on the slide with last season’s loans hardly proving to be successful after struggling for minutes at Carrow Road and posting fairly poor numbers at Boro.

His time on the other side of Glasgow saw the 23-year-old produce the best form of his career so far with 11 goals and 19 assists but he’s not come close to replicating that in the four years since.

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND - APRIL 29: Patrick Roberts of Celtic takes on Myles Beerman of Rangers during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox Stadium on April 29, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Given his time at Celtic Park and subsequent struggles, it seems ridiculous that Roberts could possibly find his way to Ibrox – although if Rangers were to get someone who contributed to the level Roberts did in the east end of Glasgow it wouldn’t be a bad thing.

With the transfer window open until the start of October, there’s plenty of time for Gerrard to add new faces, even if it seems as though the Ibrox boss wants to get them in sooner rather than later.
