Greg Docherty is reportedly a target for Championship side Rotherham this month – and the step up could really help Rangers long term.
Docherty has been in fantastic form while on loan at Shrewsbury, leading to calls for his return from some fans.
According to The Sun on Sunday (13/1; page 59), he could instead spend the rest of the season playing for The Millers.
Since joining Shrewsbury in the summer, Docherty has contributed seven goals and seven assists in 29 appearances.
With massive competition for places at Ibrox, there’s little likelihood of first-team football just now for the 22-year-old.
The boyhood Rangers fan is popular with fans and has time on his side as he looks to make his mark.
Stepping up from League One to the Championship should give him a tougher test and allow him to show Steven Gerrard why he deserves a place in his squad.
The former Hamilton ace only joined the Gers last January and is under contract at Ibrox until 2022.
Gerrard admitted recently that he was torn over whether to bring Docherty back to Ibrox this month or let him see out the season on loan.
Playing regularly is vitally important for his development though and the question now is over whether a move to a Rotherham or sticking with Shrewsbury is the right option.
There’s a definite jump in quality from League One to the Championship and Docherty should benefit from the experience.
When he returns to Ibrox in the summer, it should be a much-improved Greg Docherty who turns up for pre-season.
