Rangers could make a move this summer for German under-21 midfielder Eric Martel, according to a report.
According to The Sun, Rangers are ‘monitoring’ Martel after he was told he was free to leave the Gers’ Europa League semi-final opponents.
The 19-year-old has spent the season on loan with Austria Vienna and has made 30 appearances so far this season.
While the German has no future at RB Leipzig, he has one year left on his contract with the Bundesliga side so any suitor would need to negotiate with his club first.
Martel plays as a defensive midfielder and Rangers could face competition from Cologne, Union Berlin and Freiburg if they do make a move for the teenager.
Rangers already have a number of players who can play in that role and it seems unlikely that Martel would be anything other than a signing for the first-team.
If he does move to Ibrox, it could signal that James Sands’ loan spell hasn’t been the success Rangers had hoped for – although the potential exits of players such as Steven Davis and Scott Arfield this summer highlights a need for reinforcements.
