The Daily Record reports that Kilmarnock have initiated contract talks with Rangers linked striker Eamonn Brophy.

TEAMtalk linked the Gers with the 23-year-old in August, before the Daily Mail eluded to Ibrox interest in December, ahead of the winter transfer window.

Now, it seems Killie are trying to tie the Scotland international down.

Brophy has entered the final 18 months of his current deal and the Record report claims the Rugby Park outfit are prepared to increase his wages and offer him a two-year extension.

Brophy has seven goals in 28 appearances so far this season, but three of those have come in his last three appearances. He netted a brace in a 3-1 win over Ross County 10 days ago, before scoring Killie’s third in a 3-2 win at Hearts just a few days later.

Verdict

It’s little surprise that Killie are actively trying to tie down Brophy, who has performed well for them since his move from Hamilton in 2017.

They’ll be wanting to hold onto him beyond the summer, but a lengthening of his contract would also likely bump up what they’re able to command for him in the transfer market.

However, the talks shouldn’t be of any great concern for Rangers.

Brophy is a talented player who isn’t yet the finished article. But, right now, it’s hard to see how he would get near the Rangers team.

While he’s performed well this month, he’s not a prolific goalscorer and at 5ft 9″, doesn’t offer an aerial threat.

Particularly if the Gers opt to make Florian Kamberi’s loan move permanent in the summer, it seems hard to imagine them swooping for Brophy, whether he signs a new contract or not.
