Rangers fans on Twitter have been quick to shoot down a report claiming that Steven Gerrard’s side are interested in signing Manchester City winger Patrick Roberts – although some do see the funny side of a possible move for the ex-Celtic star.

According to French site Sqenf Football, the Gers want to sign the 23-year-old on loan but it doesn’t seem to be a particularly plausible link given his popularity on the other side of the city and declining form in recent seasons.

The winger spent last season at Norwich, where he struggled to get any game-time, and then Middlesbrough where he failed to make any impact.

His time at Celtic was arguably the best spell of his career and Rangers would need someone who is capable of doing that consistently rather than for one season in four.

The 23-year-old has also had loan spells at Leeds United and Girona and still has two years left on his contract with Pep Guardiola’s side.

There is likely to be more arrivals at Ibrox over the summer but Rangers fans don’t think there’s much chance of Roberts joining the small group of players to have played for both sides of the Old Firm.
