Partick Thistle manager Ian McCall has hinted a loan move for Rangers’ Cole McKinnon will be done ahead of Wednesday’s League Cup clash with Kilmarnock – confirming a new face will be in his squad for the Killie tie.

McKinnon and Ben Williamson have both been linked with moves to Firhill, although Williamson now looks set to join Partick’s Championship rivals Dundee on a season-long loan deal.

McCall, who has loaned a number of Rangers players in the recent past, is keen to get new faces in ahead of the new season as he discussed his plans for strengthening his squad.

The Jags have already signed Harry Milne, Anton Dowds, Aaron Muirhead, Jack McMillan, Steven Lawless and David Mitchell this summer and McCall wants “three or four” more as he looks to guide Partick back to the Premiership.

“A midfielder will be in the squad for Wednesday,” said McCall [Glasgow Times].

“I won’t say who it is yet but a lot of people probably already know it. I met a player at Firhill [on Thursday] as I think we need another three or four, or three if one can play two positions.”

Partick would be a good move for Rangers’ McKinnon to continue development

McKinnon was a standout last season in the Lowland League for the B team, earning himself a first-team debut as a result, and moving to Partick on loan would be a great opportunity for him.

Getting regular first-team football in the Championship would really test McKinnon and help bring the best out in the talented midfielder.

With minutes at Ibrox unlikely, and another season in the Lowland League not going to do much for his development, joining McCall’s side for the season should suit everybody and give McKinnon a chance to push closer to Gio van Bronckhorst’s first-team squad.
