Interest in Rangers star over as club admits Gers demands too high for defender

Niko Katic is heading back to Ibrox after Hajduk Split admitted the fee Rangers want for the Croatian is ‘too big’ for them.

Katic spent the season on loan with Split as he recovers from a serious knee injury that has kept him out of the Rangers side since before Covid.

However, Split’s Sporting Director Mindaugas Nikolicius has confirmed that Katic has returned to Rangers as they thanked him for his efforts while on loan.

“Nikola Katic is no longer with us, the transfer clause is too big for us,” Nikolicius said [Daily Record].

“He is returning to Scotland and we thank him and wish him all the best.”

With the option understood to be around £3million, it isn’t a big surprise that Hajduk have opted against signing Katic permanently,

Katic faces uphill battle to revive Rangers career

With Katic’s injury having kept him out of action for Rangers for over two years, he’s going to have to really impress this summer if he is to have any Gers future.

The arrival of John Souttar and the emergence of Leon King will have pushed him further down the pecking order although exits for the likes of Jack Simpson or Fil Helander could help Katic out.

He’s going to have to hit the ground running though and make a big impression after the change of management at Ibrox during the season means he’s yet to properly work with Gio van Bronckhorst.

During his time at Split, Katic managed 17 starts from the Croatian side and he appears to have gotten over the knee injury that left him sidelined at Ibrox.
